My talented husband built this chicken pen and two coops four years ago for our first flock. After living in this pen and free ranging daily for several years, that flock endured repeated attacks by hawks while free ranging and opossums while in the coop at night. We gave away the chickens who survived these attacks and left the pen empty for a period of time to send the predators looking for greener pastures. It’s quite disturbing to feel that you can’t protect your pets and these chickens were definitely pets. We have added the security of an electric fence around the perimeter of the pen’s chain link fencing. The chain link pen is covered by bird netting which is held up by pvc pipes. The two chicken coops are kept locked at night but the chicks are free to play in the run (fenced on the sides, top and bottom) between the two coops and in the large chicken pen during the day. Seriously hoping that our new flock is safe and secure now.
